Born in 1990 in Nanyuki town, Kenya, Stephen was raised by a single mother of 4. Being the eldest son, upon completion of high school he began fending for himself and the family. His mother taught him how to stitch and he slowly gravitated towards shoe making.
Stephen is self-taught in shoe and sandal making and he draws from his natural talent in art and design. Each pair is therefore uniquely designed and wholly handmade. On a good season, he makes 3 pairs of sandals daily, making each sandal, one of a kind from a limited hand-crafted selection. For each pair, he sources locally available materials, the bulk of which are recycled, such as car tires, which are used to make the soles of each sandal. The upper part of the shoes is made from locally sourced leather from Kenyan cattle herders.
The proceeds of his work are still used to support his mother in the countryside as well as his 4- daughter he raises as single father with the help of his mum .
Stephen says that “shoe-making delivered him from a period of darkness and a sense of feeling lost due to a lack of a sense of purpose”. He now is putting his own creativity into making some thing tangible and useful He likes to help people who have been in similar position as him, develop their skills that will enable them to have a sense of purpose through making a worthwhile contribution to society. Stephen has for example shared his skills with residents of the Kakuma Refugee Camp.
